THE SHORT VERSION

Know who to contact, keep a record, and ask what happens next.

01

Safety first, then your insurer’s instructions

For an emergency, contact emergency services first. When you need to report a property claim, use your insurer’s claims contact on the policy. Ask about reporting deadlines, your deductible, the claim number, and what information to provide. This guide cannot accept or report a claim.

Document what you can safely document

Photos, an inventory, receipts, and notes of conversations can help explain the loss. Take reasonable steps, when safe, to prevent further damage and keep receipts. Ask your insurer before permanent repairs or discarding damaged items. Do not put yourself at risk to gather evidence.

Separate guidance from a coverage decision

An agent can help you understand the process and locate the right contact. Whether a loss is covered and what is paid depend on the policy and the claim facts. Ask for explanations of decisions you do not understand.

If a concern remains unresolved

Start by raising the issue with the agent or insurer. Idaho’s Department of Insurance offers consumer assistance and a complaint process. Its complaint page lists (208) 334-4250 and links to the online complaint form. A complaint is not a guarantee of a particular claim outcome.

TAKE THESE TO YOUR AGENT

Three questions to start with.

  1. What is my claim number, and who is my contact?
  2. What documentation and deadlines apply?
  3. Can you explain the decision and the policy language behind it?
